The Brown One

The Brown One was really good, really good. My buddy Bobby and my Dad, both from out of state got to visit and try some. They mentioned it was really good. It was malty and had that tasty brown(coffee) taste to it.

I'm usually too drunk to write this blog some I'm just going to post these videos and tell you that this beer was amazing. It might take the crown of brown amoungst the bue beers!

The Brew

  • Style

    Brown Ale

    Tasting Brown.
  • Starting Water

    7.5 gallons

All Distilled Water. Just keeping record of the amount of water I've started with befroe each brew.
  • Pre Boil Gravity

Taking the gravity before the boil, to make sure the boil went well.
  • Original Gravity

The Original Gravity is the specific gravity measured before fermentation. Gravity is the ratio of the density of a sample to the density of water. Basically sugar vs water. OG - FG = ABV
  • Final Gravity

The Final Gravity is the specific gravity measured at the completion of fermentation. Basically sugar vs water. OG - FG = ABV
  • ABV

Alcohol By Volume. How much alcohol is in the beer, the higher the drunker you get! This one the math and gravities were a little off.
  • Munich Malt (9.0 SRM)

Malty-sweet flavor characteristic and adds a reddish amber color to the beer. Does not contribute signficantly to body or head retention. Use for: Bock, Porter, Marzen, Oktoberfest beers
  • Cara-Pils/Dextrine (2.0 SRM)

Significantly increases foam/head retention and body of the beer. Also sold under the names "Dextrine" and "Cara - Foam"
  • Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (60.0 SRM)

Adds body, color and improves head retention. Also called "Crystal" malt.
  • Pilsner (2 Row) Bel (2.0 SRM)

    Pilsner base malt.
  • Chocolate Malt (350.0 SRM)

Dark malt that gives a rich red or brown color and nutty flavor. Use for: Brown ales, porters, some stouts Maintains some malty flavor, not as dark as roasted malt.
  • Northern Brewer [8.50 %]

    1oz at 60min.

Also called Hallertauer Northern Brewers Used for: Bittering and finishing both ales and lagers of all kinds Aroma: Fine, dry, clean bittering hop. Unique flavor.
  • Goldings, East Kent [5.00 %]

    1oz at 15min. 1oz at 1min.

Used for: General purpose hops for bittering/finishing all British Ales Aroma: Floral, aromatic, earthy, slightly sweet spicy flavor.
  • Whirlfloc

    1 Tablet

Used to clear up the beer.
  • Yeast

    Safale American

These microscopic fungi are the mojo in the juice when it comes to Alcohol. They consume sugar, then piss carbonation and shit alchole, then reproduce and do it again.
  • Corn Sugar

Priming sugar, used finish off the fermination. It's used to self carbonate the beer during bottling.
  • IBU

    I would say about 30.

International Bittering Units. The measurement of bitterness of the beer ranging from 0 to 100, where 100 is super hoppy.
  • SRM Color Scale

Number guide to beer color, 0 - 40 Yellow into Black
    color guide
  • Finial Amount

    3ish Gallons

The finial amount of beer I got at the end of the whole brewing process

MüsingenWednesday August 1, 2017

The best part about brewing this beer was my good buddy Andy Muns came over and actually he's the reason the beer is called Musingen. We figured it's a German beer and he's German and this was his first time brewering so we just named the beer after him.
